DotThemes helps you choose software, apps, hosting, plugins and online tools without wasting money or time. This page explains how I test products, how they’re scored, and how this site earns money.
Who writes the reviews
I’m Farooque, a freelance WordPress developer and web consultant with 15+ years of experience building and managing websites for clients. I also run my own business selling website templates. I use many of the tools I review in real client work, which is why the reviews focus on practical things: setup, speed, reliability and value.
How I test products
Not every product can be tested the same way, so each review states how I tested it. I use three levels:
- Hands-on tested: I used the product myself on a paid plan, a free plan or a full trial, and tested the features I describe.
- Trial or demo tested: I used a limited trial, sandbox or official demo. I explain what I could and couldn’t try.
- Research-based: I couldn’t test it fully, so the review draws on the official documentation, product walkthroughs and feature videos, other users’ reviews, and pricing pages. The review says so clearly.
Whatever the level, I check pricing and plan limits against the company’s official site, and I note anything I couldn’t verify.
How products are scored
Each product gets a score out of 5 based on the criteria below. Which ones apply depends on the product type.
| Criteria | What I look at |
|---|---|
| Features | Whether it does what it promises, and how complete the feature set is for the price |
| Ease of use | Setup time, interface, learning curve |
| Performance and reliability | Speed, uptime (for hosting), stability, impact on your site |
| Support and documentation | Help quality, response times where I could test them, guides |
| Pricing and value | Real cost including renewals and add-ons, free plan limits, refund policy |
The overall score reflects how these combine for the kind of user the product is built for. A tool can score well for beginners and lower for advanced users, and the review says which. Scores are my professional judgment, not a lab benchmark.
How DotThemes makes money
DotThemes earns commissions through affiliate links. If you click a link and buy a product, we may be paid at no extra cost to you. We work with several affiliate programs, including networks like Impact.com and programs run directly by software and plugin companies. The site may also show ads.
What this means for the reviews:
- Commissions do not decide scores or rankings. A product with no affiliate program can rank above one that pays us.
- Reviews mention drawbacks and who a product is not suited for, even when DotThemes earns from it.
- Where a company provided a free account or trial, the review says so.
- Affiliate links are labeled, and DotThemes does not guarantee results from any product.
Keeping reviews up to date
Software and hosting plans change often. DotThemes revisits reviews every few months to check pricing, features and plan changes. Each review shows its last updated date, and major changes get a note in the review.
Corrections and feedback
If you spot an error, outdated pricing, or have a different experience with a product, email me at [email protected]. I’ll check it and correct the review if it’s wrong.
