What is a meme generator?
A meme is usually a picture with a short caption, and the classic look is big white capital letters with a black outline. This meme generator builds exactly that. You pick a starting image, edit two ready-made text layers called TOP TEXT and BOTTOM TEXT, and download the result.
One thing you should know before you start. The 15 entries in the Choose Template grid, such as Drake or Doge, are not the real meme photos. They are coloured backgrounds with an emoji on them, drawn by the page. They are handy for a quick joke, but if you want the actual Drake photo you need to save it from somewhere and use Upload Image.
Every text layer has its own controls: position as a percentage from the left and top, size, text color, outline color and width, font and alignment. Long lines wrap automatically at 90% of the picture width. The preview redraws as you type, and the tool never changes your original file. It also does not add a watermark of its own.
How to make a meme with this tool
- Click Upload Image and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP from your device, or click one of the coloured templates if you only need a quick background.
- Edit the two default layers by typing into the Enter text boxes. Use + Add Text if you need a third line, and the cross button to remove one.
- Adjust X% (left) and Y% (top) to move a layer. 50 and 12 sit near the top centre; 50 and 88 sit near the bottom.
- Change Size, Color, Stroke and Stroke W, then pick a font (Impact, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Georgia or Verdana) and an alignment.
- Set Canvas Width and Canvas Height only if you want a different output size. Uploaded images start at their own width, capped at 900 pixels.
- Click Download Meme to save meme.png.
What this meme generator includes
Unlimited text layers
Start with top and bottom text, then add as many extra lines as the joke needs. Each layer has its own position, size and style.
Outlined Impact-style text
Stroke color and Stroke W (0 to 20) give the familiar outline, so white text stays readable on both light and dark photos.
Numeric positioning
Layers are placed with X% and Y% values rather than by dragging, which makes it easy to line up two memes the same way.
CAPS switch
The CAPS checkbox is on by default and upper-cases the text on the canvas. Untick it for a quieter caption.
Custom canvas size
Canvas Width and Canvas Height are editable. Keep in mind that changing one without the other stretches the image.
Live preview and PNG export
The canvas redraws as you type, and Download Meme saves exactly what you see as a PNG file.
Who uses it, and for what
- Social media managers. Caption a product shot or an office photo for a casual post. You keep full control of the wording and do not rely on a template library.
- Teachers and trainers. Add a joke line to a slide image or a screenshot to keep a lesson light. Use a large Stroke W if the picture is busy.
- Group chat regulars. Turn a funny photo from your phone into a reply image in under a minute, then send the PNG.
- Bloggers and newsletter writers. Make a header or in-article joke image, then shrink it with the Image Compressor so the page stays quick.
Tips for a meme that reads well
- Use your own photo for anything you plan to publish. The built-in templates are plain colour blocks with an emoji, so they do not look like real meme formats.
- Keep captions short. Text wraps at 90% of the width, but three or four lines of large type cover most of the picture.
- If text is hard to read, raise Stroke W to 4 or 5 before you change the color.
- Resize large photos first with the Image Resizer. A 4000-pixel photo is capped at 900 pixels wide on upload, so you lose detail anyway.
- Typing in Canvas Height without matching Canvas Width distorts the image. Change the height only when you want a crop-like effect, and use the Image Cropper for real cropping.
- Only use pictures you have the right to share, especially for ads or products.
Is it safe? Privacy and limits
The picture is read with your browser's file reader and drawn on a canvas on the page. Nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is stored after you leave. Download Meme creates the PNG locally. Be aware of limits: the tool does not check copyright, so you are responsible for the image you caption and for how you use the result.
Meme generator FAQ
Click Upload Image, choose a photo from your device, then type your caption into the two text boxes that appear on the left. The preview on the right updates as you type. Adjust the Size and Stroke W values if the words are hard to read, and move a line with the X% and Y% boxes. When it looks right, click Download Meme and you get a PNG called meme.png. The whole process happens in your browser, so you can try as many versions as you like.
No. The templates named Drake, Doge, Success Kid and so on are drawn by the page as a flat coloured background with a large emoji, not the original photographs. They are useful as quick backdrops, and the Blank option gives you a white canvas. For a real meme format, save the image you want from a source you are allowed to use and load it with Upload Image. The caption controls work the same for both.
Yes. Click + Add Text to create another layer, as many times as you need. Each layer has its own text, X% and Y% position, size, color, stroke color, stroke width, font and alignment, so you can build a multi-panel caption or label different parts of a picture. To remove a layer, press the small cross in its top corner. The two default layers can be removed or reused like any other.
The PNG has the same pixel size as the canvas. The default is 640 by 480. When you upload an image, the width is set to the image width up to a maximum of 900 pixels and the height follows the original proportions. You can type new numbers into Canvas Width and Canvas Height, but making the canvas larger than the source just stretches the picture. For a sharper result, start with a bigger source photo, and avoid pushing the width far above 900.
No. The tool draws your image and your text on a canvas and exports it, nothing else. There is no logo, no banner and no limit on how many memes you make. That also means nobody checks what you upload, so make sure you have the right to use the picture. If you want to brand your own memes, the Watermark Image tool can add your name or logo afterwards.
The default font is Impact, which must be installed on your device. Windows and macOS include it, but some phones and Linux systems do not, and the browser then swaps in another font. You can pick Arial Black, Comic Sans, Georgia or Verdana instead. Also check that CAPS is ticked, since the classic look is all capitals, and set Stroke W to at least 3 with a black stroke over white text.
Yes, the page works in a mobile browser. Tap Upload Image to pick a photo from your gallery or take one, type the captions and use the number boxes to place them. Dragging text with your finger is not supported, because positions are set by the X% and Y% fields. The finished PNG downloads to your phone's usual downloads location. Very large photos can be slow on older phones, so resize them first if the page lags.
It depends on the picture, where you post it and your country's rules, and this page cannot tell you. Many popular meme photos are copyrighted, and commercial use is riskier than sharing in a private chat. If the meme will appear in an advert or on a product, use your own photo or one with a licence that allows editing. This is general information, not legal advice, so ask a professional if the stakes are high.
